Growing up Michelle Chase felt she had to prove herself to her parents. Chase knew that higher education was the first step. Born and raised in Prince George’s County she was ready to leave Maryland and become independent. She was accepted to Wells College in New York her senior year in high-school.
Although Chase enjoyed school in New York, she felt that her major did not suit her, so she knew she had to make a change. “I didn’t feel it, my heart was not there [as a Business Major],” said Chase, and instead decided to pursue her true passion. She couldn’t handle talking about the stock market, but with her love of the E-Channel she desired to become a publicist or reporter in fashion and entertainment.
Chase knew the perfect degree for her passion was a communication degree in journalism; However, Wells College did not offer this degree. Despite her friends and her love for New York, it was clear to Chase that she had to be happy and proud of her education. She began looking back at schools in Maryland. When Chase set her eyes on Salisbury University, she knew her heart was set. “Salisbury is close to the beach, but not too far away from home and they had my degree [of Communication: Journalism],” said Chase on choosing Salisbury University. Another reason for her decision for switching schools and degrees are the various career opportunities that a communication degree offers.
Starting her junior year at a new school was difficult on Chase. “I’m somewhat lonely here, I miss my dance team from New York,” she said, but fortunately she had the opportunity to keep her passion for dancing and meet new friends. Chase was able to join the pom-dance team, and also decided to minor in dance at Salisbury as well. Even though she left behind her friends at Wells College, Chase has made new friends, and is satisfied with her decision to follow her dreams.
Chase enjoys the class sizes, smaller campus, and the professors at Salisbury. She said, “I will stay with communication degree because it’s not boring.” Chase feels like her decision to come to Salisbury has made her parents proud, “They’re happy that I’m closer to home, saving out of state tuition fees, and that I am finally doing something I feel passionate about.”
The road to Salisbury was bumpy; Chase figured out that she had to make sacrifices to be truly happier. By changing schools and leaving her friends in New York, Chase has made new ambitions. “I want to join the Air Force as an officer, and then go back to get my masters Degree in communication,” said Chase. Even if Air Force puts her dreams on hold, she still hopes to become a publicist or journalist. She is relieved that her parents supported her decision, and that being at a new school is giving her a fresh slate.
